CEO Update – May 2023

17 May 2023

It was a pleasure to provide my insights into effective leadership to international association industry magazine Boardroom, recently. It is with this approach to leadership – what I like to call the Five Cs of good leadership in mind – clarity, collaboration, consistency, confidence and care – that the ICC Sydney team approaches all matters of the venue’s operations and collaboration with event organisers.

Through meticulous planning, the ICC Sydney team strives to provide clarity on the exact objectives of each organiser for their event through our organiser tools. Understanding how success will be assessed and evaluated from the early discussions will inform the planning process for an event which can be years in the making.

True partnership with event organisers relies on collaboration which is based on respectful and clear communication. One of our philosophies at ICC Sydney, ‘Together we do the extraordinary’ rings true when considering the interactions we enjoy with event organisers as we collectively deliver exemplary events.

A distinctive attribute of the ICC Sydney team extends to confidence – we aim to earn the trust of our important clients, stakeholders and community members.

It’s the care we provide all visitors to ICC Sydney and our broader community that I believe sets us apart. Every guest at ICC Sydney, from every walk of life, has the right to feel welcomed and respected while they are here. In line with ASM Global ACTS framework, our care and compassion drives our diverse inhouse team to deliver positive social impacts to strengthen our communities as we connect delegates with Australia’s First Nations people, culture and businesses or the emerging talent of artists in our local creative industries. To this end, we support event organisers to tap into the resources of our industry leading Legacy Program to create positive social impact and reduce harm to the environment across the five comprehensive streams of the program: Environmental Sustainability, First Nations, Creative Industries, Innovators and Entrepreneurs and Generation Next.

Beyond our collective good intentions, taking action towards corporate social responsibility (CSR) has never been as important. In fact, through our conversations with our valued clients, stakeholders and community, it is clear that making strides, rather than taking steps, towards sustainable practices at events has become one of our most important baseline measures of event success.

That’s why at ICC Sydney, building on our strong foundation of purpose built sustainable infrastructure, processes and services, we have long been committed to collaborating with event organisers through our industry leading Legacy Program to help deliver on CSR goals creating positive social legacies while reducing the impact on the environment — together through events.

To deliver a sustainable event, is to deliver a successful one and CommBank’s Momentum: Accelerating Australia’s Transition was an exemplary example of this. It is gratifying to read Imagination’s Senior Project Manager, James Forsyth’s reflection on his experience with ICC Sydney where he spoke of the team’s dedication and delivery of sustainable initiatives, reporting and outcomes. In practical terms, the event was enhanced through the Legacy Program’s Environmental Sustainability stream – in particular, the bespoke culinary, sustainable procurement, event management, waste management and reporting services implemented.

I welcome you to engage ICC Sydney to support your next successful and sustainable event.
