ICC Sydney invests in venue management stars of the future

18 Jan 2023

International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney), managed by ASM Global, strengthens its commitment to training and developing its events professionals as three of the venue’s star candidates progress through to the second year of the Venue Management Association’s (VMA) School.

ICC Sydney CEO and Group Director – Convention Centres, ASM Global (APAC), Geoff Donaghy said that he is proud of the large contingent of representatives that have worked their way through the Venue Management School (VMS) to date.

“In line with the ASM Global ACTS framework, ICC Sydney strives to invest in the development of our people and provide pathways to enrich their careers. Our clients benefit from their in-depth venue management knowledge, and it enhances our team members’ lived experience while working at our venue.

“With five alumnus among the ranks of our culinary, audio visual and event services teams at ICC Sydney, and three more represented in the current cohort including our Manager, Business Development & Partnerships, Hera Yaghlejian, Assistant Manager, Interface – FM Services, Claire Field, and Senior Audio Visual Project Manager, Anthony Chin, ICC Sydney offers event organisers access to well-informed, professional support when delivering their world class events,” Mr Donaghy said.

Designed for major venue operators in the Asia Pacific region, the rigorous two-year Venue Management School, now in its thirtieth year, was developed to upgrade skills and knowledge and establish lifelong connections — all facilitated through venue industry recognised instructors.

ICC Sydney Director of Human Resources, Luke Fleming said the latest students advancing through the program will benefit from exposure to over 30 bespoke subjects of venue management as well as ten days of in-depth face-to-face training at VMS in November each year.

“With a direct link to leaders in the venue management sector such as ASM Global (Asia Pacific) Group Director, People and Culture, Rebecca Barry, and Group General Counsel, Adam Lister, participants not only learn the theory of operational methodologies, but the full breadth of managing a major venue – from marketing, sales, event management, finance, logistics and legal considerations – the course covers it all. Importantly, they can develop lifelong relationships with contemporaries from around the Asia Pacific region,” Mr Fleming said.

Current VMA student, Senior Audio Visual Project Manager, Anthony Chin said, “The learning opportunities have been incredible. The calibre of the lectures and inspirational instructors were outstanding. Above all, friendships have been forged through great discussions and stimulating debates. I look forward to the second year!”
